چکیده

Roberto Caldeyro-Barcia studied fetal health in Uruguay during the second half of the twentieth century. Caldeyro-Barcia developed Montevideo units, which are used to quantify intrauterine pressure, or the force of contractions during labor. Intrauterine pressure is a useful measure of the progression of labor and the health of a fetus [3]. Caldeyro-Barcia?s research on fetal health often contradicted common obstetric practices, prompting him to publically challenge practices such as induction [4] of labor using oxytocin, forced pushing during labor, and birth position in which the woman lays on her back during labor. CaldeyroBarcia?s methods of monitoring intrauterine pressure and development of Montevideo units furthered research in maternal and fetal health and improved the use of medical interventions during labor and delivery.

Systolic Fetal Heart Murmur Detected in Fetal Phonocardiography

The electric fetal heart activity was firstly recorded as tiny deflections on maternal limb lead electrocardifogram (ECG) by Cremer [1], direct lead fetal ECG with needle electrode by Caldeyro-Barcia et al. [2] and with scalp lead clip electrode by Hon [3]. Indirect maternal abdominal lead fetal ECG (fECG) was recorded by Maeda and Nakano [4] and others. Intrapartum fetal heart rate (FHR) was m...

Solution of Controversy in Fetal Heart Rate Patterns

Fetal well-being was estimated by the enlargement of maternal abdomen, palpation of fetus on the abdomen, maternal perception of fetal kicking, and listening to fetal heart sound with obstetric stethoscope, in old age. Antique diagnosis of fetal life was fetal QRS found on limb lead electrocardiogram (ECG) studied by Cremer, which was progressed to fetal ECG amplifier composed of vacuum tube re...

Membranes ruptured spontaneously after cervical dilatation had progressed beyond 6 cm, usually with füll cervical dilatation (1). The fetus was single, in cephalic presentation. Cephalo-pelvic disproportion was discarded. All the newly bo...

Categorization of Fetal Heart Rate Decelerations in American and European Practice: Importance and Imperative of Avoiding Framing and Confirmation Biases

Interpretation of electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) remains controversial and unsatisfactory. Fetal heart rate (FHR) decelerations are the commonest aberrant feature on cardiotocographs and considered "center-stage" in the interpretation of EFM. A recent American study suggested that the lack of correlation of American three-tier system to neonatal acidemia may be due to the current peculiar no...
